The PNWHL 'The Pacific Northwest
Hockey League, premier league in the north, came to Prince Rupert
for the 1972-1973 season with the entry of the Prince Rupert Halibut
Kings. The Kings were really formed in 1971-72. An all-star team
from the new Prince Rupert Senior 'A' Hockey League was put together
and enjoyed some great success against some highly-touted PNWHL
squads of the day. This success, plus the tremendous fan response
prompted the bid for PNWHL membership.
Putting a brand new hockey team together was not an easy task, but
coach Pop Wright, everybody's choice for the job, had great
cooperation from all sectors of the community. with the help of a
lot of hockey-happy people, Pop, and trainer Val Joly produced a
team that could give any squad in the PNWHL a run for their money.
Gord Gillam, Gord Walker and association president at the time, Bill
McChesney formed a "terrible trio" of "on-the-street movers" behind
the Kings, with the fans providing the support and cheers to the
point that the stores all sold out of throat lozenges.'

I will continue to add as much written history as I can glean from those
who actually lived and played it. |
